Enchanted Rock’s Trails
The park has six named trails ranging from a flat half-mile loop to a challenging 4.6-mile perimeter hike. Here’s what to know before you pick a route.
Easiest Trails for Families
The Interpretive Loop is your best bet with young kids. It’s a 0.5-mile flat trail near the base of Little Rock that takes about 25 minutes and brings you close to native plants and wildlife with no real elevation gain. Dogs are welcome, and it stays open after sunset for evening walks or stargazing.
Moderate to Difficult Trails for Avid Hikers
For hikers ready to earn the view, the park has three routes:
- Summit Trail:8 miles one-way with 425 feet of elevation gain up the main dome. Plan on 45 minutes up over steep granite.
- Inner Loop: A 3.1-mile route connecting the Summit, Echo Canyon, and Base trails, winding through massive boulders on the back side of the rock.
- Loop Trail: The full 4.6-mile perimeter hike around the park, usually about 2.5 hours.
Why Is It Called Enchanted Rock?
The name traces back to a mix of Native American legend and early settler stories. The Tonkawa, Comanche, and other tribes considered the massive pink granite dome sacred, drawn to the eerie groans and flickering lights that appeared at night. Both had natural explanations. The groaning came from thermal expansion as the granite cooled after a hot day, and the flickers were moonlight bouncing off the rock’s wet feldspar crystals. Early pioneers picked up on the stories, and the name stuck.
History of the Area
Enchanted Rock is one of the largest exposed granite domes in North America, formed roughly one billion years ago and rising 425 feet above the surrounding terrain. It served as a sacred site for the Tonkawa, Apache, and Comanche long before Texas statehood. The site was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971 and became a Texas State Natural Area in 1978.
