Sunset Views at Willow City Loop
If you only have time for one drive in the Hill Country, make it Willow City Loop. This 13-mile scenic road winds through rugged terrain, canyon views, creek crossings, and open ranchland that looks different with every season. Spring brings the show everyone talks about, with bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and poppies covering the hillsides from March through May. But honestly, the loop rewards a visit any time of year.
For photography, the best light is early morning or late afternoon. Weekday mornings in particular give you the road mostly to yourself, which makes all the difference. Keep in mind that all the land along the loop is privately owned, so shoot from the road and respect the landowners.

The hike to the top takes about 10 to 15 minutes and is short but steep, with a permanent lighted cross at the summit that makes for a striking subject at sunrise, sunset, and after dark.
The park has been a part of Fredericksburg’s story since the beginning. The hilltop, originally called Kreuzberg by German settlers, was used as a lookout point by Native Americans long before the town was founded in 1846. The current lighted cross has stood at the summit since 1946 and was replaced in 2024.

Unwind at the Japanese Garden of Peace
Tucked alongside the National Museum of the Pacific War campus, the Japanese Garden of Peace is one of the most visually serene spots in Fredericksburg, and many visitors walk right past it without realizing it is there. The garden was a gift from the people of Japan to the people of the United States, completed in 1976 as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. It features traditional Japanese design elements, including raked gravel, carefully placed stones representing Pacific islands, native plantings, and a replica of Japanese Admiral Togo’s personal study.
