Kid-Friendly Activities in Fredericksburg
While Fredericksburg is widely known for its art and wine scene, there are many other activities that can be enjoyed as a family during your stay in one of our monthly Fredericksburg TX rentals which are more isolated than hotel rentals. Children will love Marketplatz, Fredericksburg’s downtown greenspace. Stroll through the garden areas, enjoy a picnic, and allow your children to burn some energy on the playground before returning home to your places to stay in Fredericksburg TX.
Families will also enjoy the Sauer-Beckmann Farmstead, a living history museum located within the LBJ State Park and Historic Site. Kids will be amazed to learn what life was like in 1900-1918 rural Texas, as interpreters in period clothing go about their farm life, acting as a typical Texas-German farm family. Observe traditional farm chores such as sausage making, sheep shearing, canning, feeding, milking, gathering eggs, slopping the hogs, cleaning, cooking on a wood-burning stove, churning butter, scrubbing floors with homemade lye soap, and plowing using a team of horses. Once the home and farm of Augusta Sauer Lindig, who served as midwife at the birth of President Johnson, this is an authentic farm rich in the country’s history. What better way to engage children in the past than through a reenactment, drawing them in through the power of storytelling? Both children and adults will marvel at the intense labor and grit that farming in the early 20th century required. Compared to the conveniences of modern-day, you will leave the Sauer-Beckmann Farmstead with a greater appreciation for both the country’s roots and progression.
Explore Wildseed Farms
To enjoy some time in nature, walk the trails at Wildseed Farms. This area is especially beautiful in spring when blooming wildflowers are bursting with color. As the largest working wildflower farm in the entire country, there is no shortage of eye-catching blooms to see at Wildseed. There are over 200 acres to explore, although sticking to the walking paths is required so as not to damage the plants. The paved, half-mile walking trail winds among colorful blooms and water features, with butterflies and hummingbirds flitting about. The contained path is a great place for kids to get out and enjoy nature in the beautiful Hill Country. If you spot something that you’d like to grow at home, there are a variety of plants and pottery available at the on-site nursery. Of course, this is wine country, so in addition to the endless fields of flowers, Wildseed also grows a variety of grapes for wine production. Try a sample in the tasting room or stop for a snack at the onsite Brewbonnet Biergarten. Parents can enjoy a cold beer while kids delight over a dish of peach ice cream, made with locally grown peaches from the nearby Stonewall area.
Visit The National Museum of Pacific War
The National Museum of the Pacific War located downtown will captivate your children as they wander among military vehicles and participate in interactive exhibits. Explore Patrol Torpedo Boat-309, a scene that replicated a dock in the South Pacific where the crew is preparing to embark on a mission. Older children will be enraptured by live reenactments in the Pacific Combat Zone, as soldiers capture fortified positions, and use landing craft and explosives. Due to the loud noises, the live reenactments are not recommended for children under six years old. Kids five and under enjoy free admission to the museum, while students six and older who present an ID enter at just $7. Some special exhibits require an additional purchased ticket.
