History of Cross Mountain

Cross Mountain is a historic marl and limestone hill in present-day Fredericksburg, Texas. Before the arrival of the early German settlers, Cross Mountain was used as a Native American lookout.

During the colonization of Fredericksburg in 1847, a timber cross was mysteriously found on the site’s hilltop. The pioneers aptly nicknamed the hill “Kreuzberg,” or Cross Mountain. In 1946, the timber cross was replaced by a new and permanent lighted cross that still stands today.

Recreation at Cross Mountain

There is only one main trail that takes visitors to the top of Cross Mountain. This short and easy trail takes visitors up 5-10 minutes of stairs to reach the summit. To skip the stairs or to make the hike slightly longer, visitors can spiral up Cross Mountain’s hillside to arrive at the top. Once standing on Cross Mountain, visitors can view the town of Fredericksburg and the expanse of Texas Hill Country. A small grotto in the hillside of Cross Mountain is also worth checking out.
