Texas Hill Country is known for its unique architecture. Many of the historical edifices built by the German immigrants who colonized the area in the 19th century are found nowhere else besides Texas Hill Country. Located in the heart of the Fredericksburg Historic District sits the opulent Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. The history of Fredericksburg, Texas and Saint Mary’s Catholic Church run almost parallel. Continue reading to learn about why visiting Saint Mary’s Church is a must for churchgoers, history buffs, and architecture enthusiasts.

Old Saint Mary’s

The Saint Mary’s Catholic Church was erected by a handful of German immigrants in 1846. Its humble log structure soon became a central hub for faith, hope, and love in Fredericksburg and throughout the Hill Country.  In 1861, the log church was replaced by a stone building. Now known as Old Saint Mary’s, this beloved church has been repurposed many times. Most notably, Old Saint Mary’s served as a Fredericksburg schoolhouse. Due to its significant role in the history of Fredericksburg, Old Saint Mary’s was recorded as a Texas Historical Landmark in 1996.

Saint Mary’s Catholic Church Today

The congregations at Old Saint Mary’s eventually became too large and in 1906, a new church was built. This new Saint Mary’s Church was constructed from the finest materials and reflects the Gothic architecture popular in Europe at the time it was built.

Both the external architecture and the interior of the newer Saint Mary’s Catholic Church are as opulent as they are awe-inspiring. The lines, colors, and volume of the building are all perfectly joined to create a humbling and jaw-dropping aesthetic. The stonework, glass, paintings, and pipe organ are also equally noteworthy, each contributing to Saint Mary’s perfectly sacred environment for worship.
