Learning more about a city’s history and people gives locals and visitors alike a deeper appreciation for a place. While Fredericksburg is well known for its wine scene, delving deeper into both the area’s history and the country’s history is well worth the time and effort while spending time in this historic town.
The Admiral Nimitz Gallery is housed in a landmark building that dates back to the 1800s and was originally the Steamboat Hotel. Today, this restored building holds its original character and splendor and houses displays on the life and career of Admiral Chester Nimitz, who served in the Navy and held key roles in World War II.
Admiral Nimitz was born in 1885 in Fredericksburg, Texas and lived in the Steamboat Hotel throughout his childhood, as it was owned and operated by his grandfather. Nimitz served in both World War I and World War II. He was hand-picked by President Roosevelt to relieve Admiral Kimmel just after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and was the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific during the Battle of Midway, which is still considered the U.S. Navy’s greatest victory. Nimitz also signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on behalf of the United States following the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, when Japan admitted defeat.
This cherished hero heralding from Fredericksburg played key roles in World War II, and the exhibits at the Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site and within the larger National Museum of the Pacific War are a must for any history buff.
