An exciting city with an old-world charm is the right way to describe the central Texas city of Fredericksburg. Located in the scenic Texas Hill Country, this city is home to more than 60 famous wineries and vineyards. Though this delicious wine has put Fredericksburg on the map today, it was equally popular and significant in the past, holding special importance since the 1800s when the first German settlers arrived on this land; kicking off a long saga of Fredericksburg history.

German Roots

The history of Fredericksburg takes us back to the 1840s, when the town was developed by the first German settlers. It was officially founded on May 8th, 1846, under the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas due to the pioneer efforts of John O. Meusebach. He further extended a peace treaty with the native Comanche Indians for the right to farm; in return, the Indians could visit the land and seek food if necessary. Named after the Prince Frederick of Prussia, the town recorded a population of 754 residents by 1850. The early settlers received land in Fredericksburg and around 10 acres outside the town for growing crops. The settlers planted corn on the fields and also built houses and storehouses to place their provisions. Farming and trading were recognized as the primary activities in town. After the early settlers built the first set of houses and farmlands, several immigrants followed in the summer from the 1850s onwards. Within two years of establishment, the first road was built from Austin to Fredericksburg. The first store was established by J.L Ransleben and the first hotel was built by the Nimitz family.

Fort Martin Scott was built in 1848 for the protection of the early settlers and housed around 100 men and women. The town grew in great numbers and showed subsequent development in the manufacturing industry. It is still recognized as a major manufacturing hub in Gillespie County with factories for iron, cement, mattress, peanut oil, furniture, and much more. The first Catholic school was built in 1856, the first newspaper was started in 1877, the first electric-light company was started in 1896, and the first railroad started in 1913. It was included in the 1930 United States census, reporting a population of 2,416.
